step 1 of 1How this calculator works
How is post length calculated?
Posts are buried roughly a third of their total length. For a 6 ft fence, buy a 9–10 ft post so 3 ft is set below grade. This calculator rounds up to the nearest common stock length.
Why does gap size matter for pickets?
Picket count is total fence length in inches divided by picket width plus gap. A privacy style uses a 0″ gap; a picket style typically spaces boards 1–2″ apart, which lowers the picket count but doesn’t reduce coverage in the same way.
Why do gates need extra posts?
Gate posts carry hinge and swing load, so each gate uses two dedicated posts in addition to the line posts along the fence run. This calculator adds them automatically.
How is concrete calculated?
Hole diameter is estimated at roughly three times the post’s width, per common code minimums, with depth matching the buried post length. Bag count is rounded up per hole using a standard 60 lb mix yield.
